A disgruntled shopper has taken to social media to vent their frustration at Walmart's new anti-theft measures, vowing to "only shop at Target" in the future.

The retail giant has come under fire for its stringent security measures, which have been implemented in an attempt to curb a surge in shoplifting incidents.

The customer shared their negative experience at a Walmart store in Burlington, Cinnaminson, New Jersey, where they found numerous items locked behind anti-theft glass.

They expressed their annoyance on X, writing: "@Walmart Everything is locked up in Cinnaminson in Burlington Walmart. They wouldn't even let me read the labels on the formula of my first time buying formula."

The shopper was particularly upset about not being able to access product labels and compared their shopping experience unfavorably with that at rival retailer Target, where similar items are readily available on shelves. "I feel like a human there," they said.

Anti-theft glass is a common security feature used by retailers to protect high-risk items from theft by enclosing them behind protective barriers. However, some customers have criticized the system's functionality, citing instances where malfunctioning buttons or understaffing have resulted in delays and frustration.

To improve the in-store shopping atmosphere, Walmart has declared a series of alterations in response to escalating criticism. One significant change is the elimination of self-checkout kiosks, an action created to address customer issues about glitches and the necessity for increased support from store associates, reports the Express US.

Speaking to Business Insider, Walmart's spokesperson Brian Little made clear: "We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the chance to provide more personalized and efficient service."

Several Walmart outlets, including shops in Cleveland, Ohio, and the St Louis area, have already initiated the shift from self-checkout, with intentions to complete the transition over the forthcoming weeks.
