Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, who appeared in four movie in the franchise, shares his top choice for the next 007. Based on the character created by Ian Fleming, there have now been six actors who have played the iconic British superspy. Daniel Craig is the latest star to have played the role, and his departure with the explosive ending of No Time To Die in 2021 has wiped the slate clean for a new take on the character, but it's not yet clear who will play the character next.
As the wait for Bond 26 news continues, Brosnan tells the BBC that he thinks Cillian Murphy should be the next actor to play 007. Brosnan doesn't elaborate on his answer, but Murphy rocketed to global fame with the release of Oppenheimer last year, in which he plays the title role. Read Brosnan's full comment below:
“Cillian would do a magnificent job as James Bond on His Majesty’s Secret Service."
Could Cillian Murphy Be The Next James Bond?
Why It's Unlikely The Oppenheimer Star Will Play 007

A number of actors are either rumored to be in the running for Bond or have appeared on betting odds charts, and Murphy has certainly been among them. The Irish actor, however, who is also known for his role in Peaky Blinders, does seem unlikely to actually take on the role. While Murphy has consistently proven himself a talented actor, his age could be what takes him out of the running.
At 47 years old, Murphy is older than most actors are when they take on the role. Although Roger Moore first played 007 when he was 45, it's been reported that producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Williams are looking for someone in their early or mid-30s for the role. This is mostly due to the franchise commitments that come with the part, with actors typically having to sign on for at least three movies.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who is 33, is currently considered a top contender for the role of Bond.
Murphy himself would say as much in a recent interview with HELLO Magazine, simply saying that he is "a bit too old for that." Idris Elba, 51, another actor widely considered a top choice, told Vanity Fair back in 2016 that he felt "too old" for the role then, and he was only in his early 40s. While Broccoli has not revealed which actors are top choices, it seems like the next James Bond is likely to be a younger actor, especially since Murphy has seemingly taken himself out of the running.
